I took the job (as a judge on The Sing-Off)because there was nothing about it that seemed fraudulent. At first I wasn’t going to because of what it looked like on paper. Oh, now he’s gonna be a judge on a reality show? What an asshole. But because it’s a cappella, something I’m interested in, listening to them and giving them some encouragement and feedback, I can do that, that’s good. There was something about it that felt like something I do.

People have asked a lot about the criteria for our decisions. For instance why do some acts get a pass on bad tuning while others don’t? I don’t know, why does Bob Dylan get a pass and Paul McCartney not? Some music translates out of tune and some music should maybe even be a little out of tune to work. If accuracy (or lack of it) gets in the way, then I comment. So yes, there are some double standards sometimes. There are triple and infinite standards. Each group is different.

Let me first answer the question that I know I would be asking: What’s up with my hair in the pre-performance comment clips? Well friends, that’s a conspiracy of perfectly groomed hair (with expensive NBC gel) finished off with a breakneck windy ride on a golf cart across the studio lot moments prior to the taping.
